Apr 21, 2013 It's King's Quest 8 - Mask of Eternity on Windows 7 (x64)! I'm using Zeckensack's Glide Wrapper with the resolution of 800x600 pixels and a higher render quality. Download Windows Vista/7/8 Patch.
- KQMoE Shim (kqmoefix) The King's Quest: Mask of Eternity - Shim is a run-time patch that has been developed to workaround the infamous TalkComplete bug (random cutscene freeze), a lot of compatibility issues, and some annoyances.
- OS X 10.7 or newer. King's Quest 8 - Mask of Eternity. General troubleshooting. Known solutions to game issues. Other helpful articles.
- Mar 08, 2017 King's Quest: Mask of Eternity, the latest in the venerable series from Sierra On-Line, is a noble effort, an adventure inside an RPG wrapped in an action game. From every angle, this game is a vast, sprawling experiment that, while falling short of its goal to be all things to all players, is enjoyable and noteworthy nonetheless.

When playing the ending of Mask of Eternity, after Lucreto is sucked into the vortex and the game pulls back to the stone wall (I have it where I see what Connor sees) and the game crashes. I know all that's left is the video of the ending...but is there a way to get this to play, or could something be wrong with my install? The ending played fine until I had to reinstall after reinstalling windows.
If seeing my save would help, just ask and I can upload it, I have a save from after the fifth piece of the mask has been laid down

Mask Of Eternity On Windows 10
This is old and unlikely to help you, but maybe someone else will benefit. All credit goes to user ARABLIZZARD2413 for this solution. I am just trying to simplify or make it more accessible to the non-techy people out there.
The KQ8 videos/cinematics use a video codec that was bundled with old versions of Windows, but has since been disabled by default due to possible security issues.
To fix this, you need to use the Windows command prompt. These steps may vary depending on what version of windows you use. All of my instructions are using Windows 10.
Step 1.
Locate the file called 'ir50_32.dll' on your computer. This will be located in a Windows system folder. On Windows 10, it's located in 'C:WindowsSysWOW64' ... if you can't find it, try using the built-in Windows search features to find this file. Note down the full path to this directory (in this case, it's just C:WindowsSysWOW64)
Step 2.
Open the 'Administrator' Command Prompt. This is different from the normal command prompt as it has elevated privileges. To access this in Windows 10, press Winkey+X, then click on 'Command Prompt (Admin)'. You'll then see a black screen that you can type in (looks like the old MS-DOS prompt, if you're old enough to remember that).
Step 3.
Using the command prompt, navigate to the directory that you found above. The command to change directories is 'cd', so in the example directory above (Windows 10), you'd type 'cd C:WindowsSysWOW64' to move to that directory.
Step 4.
Type 'regsvr32 ir50_32.dll' and press enter. You should get a popup in Windows notifying you of success.
The codec needed by King's Quest 8 is now enabled on your machine. You should be able to watch the intro cinematic & others without any errors. (You may need to repeat the steps above if you restart your machine).

I must be missing something obvious. I can't get KQ8 to start. If I set the compatibility to Windows XP I can occasionally get the initial screen to flash but that is it. I'm running in Windows 10 with an NVIDIA K1000M processor. I don't have a DVD in this machine but it looks like the install script is supposed to deal with that. Very mysterious.

Not the GOG setups that I have seen in the past. Download kqmoefix.zip at http://svn.nicode.net/kqmoefix/bin/ extract the kq8fix.exe (archive password is 'kqmoefix') into the directory where you installed KQ8, run it, enable the shim for the Mask.exe, and make sure 'emulate ./cd/ as CD-ROM' is checked... play KQ8 and report any issues with kqmoefix :-)

Yeah, KQ8 won't work if you don't have a DVD/CD-ROM drive on your computer. I had the same problem as you with a very similar setup. You can emulate a CD-ROM drive using a number of tools (I used Virtual CloneDrive which is free: https://www.redfox.bz/download/SetupVirtualCloneDrive.exe) but Nicode's solution is probably easier and I believe it addresses some other common issues too.nicode

Most noticeably the infamous 'TalkComplete' bug (missing game events / cutscene freeze) that has never been fixed by Sierra (they provided saved games as workaround) and the broken saved game loading on Wine - the primary reasons for developing kqmoefix. ps: And while we are at it... my English isn't that good (other languages are very welcome). The resource files need some proof reading by a native speaker: setup/setup.en-US.rc.

I finally got a chance to look at this again and got the game running (sans intro). This is the only one of the series I never played so I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the help!

What do you need to know about free software?
From Vivendi Universal Games: It is a time long ago, and magic and myth are embodied in every living creature roaming the world. Unicorns graze in forest meadows, wizards concoct mystical spells, and kings and queens manage thriving kingdoms. An evil being has summoned a spell to break the Mask of Eternity--the global icon of truth, light, and order--and a piece falls to Earth and is discovered by you, a youth called Connor. You pick it up, and everyone else in the kingdom turns to stone. You must gather strength and courage and set out to reseat the Mask of Eternity and restore law, light, and order to your world. Unlike traditional 2D adventure games of the past, this third-person-viewed 3D game allows you to peek around any corner, push and pull objects, open doors, wade into rivers and lakes, and even fight with other characters. But make no mistake, Mask of Eternity is not a shoot-'em-up game. The open environment allows you to live the unfolding story, even if you need to fight your way past evil characters to advance the story.
